Basically the Blood group of a person is determined by the type of antigen in your blood.

Group A - Antigen A
Group B - Antigen B
Group AB - Antigen A + Antigen B
Group O - Neither Exists.

The scientists have a devised a way to Eliminate or Add the necessary type of Antigen in the Blood.

Say for example.

A Person X has blood group A. he needs blood urgently. A Person Y having blood group AB wants to donate blood to him. Then Simply* by the rule of Mathematics :

-> A = AB - B;

So the Doctors remove the Antigen B from person Y's blood to generate blood with Antigen A (only) i.e. Blood Group A. So Now person X receives Y's blood. So X has become Universal Receiver and Y has become universal Donor

* the word 'Simply' has been used here with due respect to the Efforts that need to be put into the whole thing.
